ECU Psychological Services Centre

Who are we?

The ECU Psychological Services Centre is the training clinic for post graduates studying Clinical and Clinical/Forensic Psychology at Masters and Doctoral level.  All of these trainees undertake their first practical placement at the clinic, under intensive supervision.

The clinic is unique in Australia because it is located off-campus, in the heart of Joondalup.  This makes it easily accessible to the general public, who form the client base and facilitates excellent communication with other services.  The clinic shares a building with the local Department for Community Services and Disability Services Commission. It is adjacent to the Joondalup Health Campus and very close to the new Family Relationships Centre. Ease of communication permits cross-referrals, networking and collaborative programs.

An additional advantage is the fact that trainees regard it very much as a workplace and are able to discard their student “hats” and take on a professional persona. “The Clinic is a very professional, supportive and encouraging environment,” say current trainees “where we can integrate contemporary, evidence-based therapies into our practice”.

Trainees gain a broad experience which equips them to take on further placements in external agencies with a high level of confidence and skill.

What Do We Offer?

The Psychological Services Centre provides counselling, psychotherapeutic services and psychological assessments to members of the community. Clients may be self-referred, or referred by professionals in the health, legal, educational, employment and other sectors.

Clients are able to self-refer and many come to the clinic via personal recommendation. Referrals are also accepted from GP’s, pediatricians, schools, community health centres and other local agencies Clients present with a wide range of issues, including anxiety and depression, relationship problems and difficulties with child behaviour management.  They range from primary school children to older adults.  Fees are low and are determined on a sliding scale according to employment status.  Many clients would have no alternative means of accessing psychological support.  Feedback surveys posted out to all clients a few weeks after close of service indicate very high levels of satisfaction.  “Great service, great price”; “The counselor was fantastic and really helped me through some tough times”; “I loved how friendly everyone was – they made my child very comfortable, he enjoyed being there and he still asks to go back”.

Regular Group Programs are also available.  “Quit-Smoking” and “Mood Management” groups have been popular in the past and “Boost Your Self- Esteem” will commence shortly.
